About Me

I'm Ian, and World Through Frames is my personal photography project.

There's no grand story behind it. I've simply been taking photographs for nearly forty years, usually while doing something else I enjoy — travelling, walking, sailing and climbing mountains or exploring somewhere new.

I grew up close to the Alps, where walking and the outdoors were part of life from an early age. Photography came along with that and the two have remained closely connected ever since. A camera accompanied me into the Scottish hills, on climbing trips and into the Alps, and eventually much further afield.

For many years that meant film and boxes of slides. Later came digital cameras, Lightroom and rather more hard-drive space. The technology has changed enormously, but I'm not sure the reason for taking photographs has changed very much.

As travel took me further afield, the subjects became broader. Landscapes are still important, but World Through Frames will also includes wildlife, cities, historic places and the ordinary details encountered along the way.

The photographs now span decades and very different parts of the world. That's one of the reasons I created the site.

There is another side to the project.

My professional background is in software and data, and World Through Frames is also something I've built myself. Rather than using an off-the-shelf photography platform, I've gradually developed the site around the way I want to organise photographs, places and journeys.

That probably means it will never really be finished.

New photographs will be added as I travel, while older ones will gradually emerge from the archive. There are still boxes of slides to revisit, photographs to rescan and journeys from years ago that I'd like to reconstruct.

For me, that's part of the enjoyment of World Through Frames.

It's somewhere to bring all of those photographs together — and to see where it goes.
