Buenos Aires – Floralis Genérica & El Ateneo Bookshop

We had missed Floralis Genérica the day before because our guidebook showed the wrong location, so we planned to visit it on our final morning. As it turned out our flight to Puerto Iguazú was rescheduled to a later departure the morning of the flight. This gave us a couple of extra hours which we used for a leisurely walk back to the hotel.

After breakfast we caught a taxi to the Floralis Genérica, which annoyingly was right by the museum we had been to yesterday!
Floralis Genérica
One of Buenos Aires' most recognisable modern landmarks, Floralis Genérica is a giant stainless steel sculpture designed by Argentine architect Eduardo Catalano. Standing 23 metres high, its six enormous petals were created to open in the morning and close again at sunset, symbolising hope and renewal. Even when viewed in bright midday sunshine, the highly polished metal creates stunning reflections of the surrounding park, trees and deep blue sky, making the sculpture almost appear to merge with its surroundings. It's a striking piece of public art and a favourite stop for both photographers and visitors exploring the city's parks.

Urban Wildlife in Buenos Aires
Before leaving, we spent a little time photographing some of Buenos Aires' birdlife in the shade of the surrounding trees. A Rufous Hornero, Argentina's national bird, was busy searching through the grass, while a Chalk-browed Mockingbird paused long enough for a few photographs. It was a pleasant reminder that even in the heart of a busy city, there's always wildlife to discover.

The Rufous Hornero is one of South America's best-known birds and the national bird of Argentina. Easily recognised by its warm rufous-brown plumage and distinctive mud nests, it is commonly found in parks, gardens, farmland and open woodland. Horneros spend much of their time walking across the ground searching for insects and other small invertebrates.

The Chalk-browed Mockingbird is a widespread songbird found across much of southern South America. It is easily recognised by its pale eyebrow, long tail and confident behaviour. Highly adaptable, it thrives in parks, gardens and open countryside where it feeds on insects, fruit and seeds, often foraging on the ground.

Our final stop was El Ateneo Grand Splendid, widely regarded as one of the world's most beautiful bookshops. Housed inside a beautifully restored 1919 theatre, many of the original features have been preserved, including the ornate balconies, decorative ceiling and impressive stage, which is now home to a café. Even if you're not a book lover, it's worth visiting simply to admire the architecture and experience one of Buenos Aires' most iconic landmarks.

Our final stroll through the city brought us back to our hotel, where we collected our luggage before heading to the airport for our flight north to Iguazú Falls.
