Story Day
Laguna Azul and the Torres del Paine Towers
Day 9 / 2/20/2026
Our final day in Torres del Paine took us to the quieter eastern side of the park, where the landscape opened out beneath vast Patagonian skies. From the shores of Laguna Azul, we were treated to stunning views of the Torres rising above the lake — a fitting and unforgettable finale to our time in TdP.
We had deliberately allowed ourselves extra time in Torres del Paine in case the weather turned against us. Fortunately, the exceptional conditions left us with a spare day to explore the quieter eastern reaches of the park.

Heading north from Cerro Castillo, the roads became narrower and the landscape increasingly remote. Although we felt a long way from civilisation, the drive itself was straightforward and we rarely encountered another vehicle. Sweeping views across the Patagonian steppe and mountains on the horizon ensured that the journey towards Laguna Azul was every bit as rewarding as the destination itself.
After arriving at Laguna Azul, we made our way to a viewpoint overlooking the lake, hoping for a clear view of the famous granite towers.
Although clouds drifted across the peaks, the combination of Laguna Azul, the rolling Patagonian steppe and the imposing mountains beyond created one of the most memorable views of our time in Torres del Paine.
One advantage of carrying a telephoto lens was being able to capture close-up views of the Torres del Paine towers from the Laguna Azul viewpoint. Dark clouds clung to the peaks, occasionally revealing shafts of sunlight that lit up the granite walls. The ever-changing conditions gave the scene a dramatic quality that seemed perfectly suited to Patagonia.
After spending time at the viewpoint, we made our way back towards the car and stopped by the shore of Laguna Azul for lunch. With hardly anyone else around, it was a peaceful place to pause and admire the scenery. Even from the lakeside, the distant towers remained visible beneath the ever-changing Patagonian skies.
While eating lunch beside the lake, we noticed a small dark bird hopping among the driftwood. Its vivid red eye immediately caught our attention, and later we identified it as a Fire-eyed Diucon, one of the distinctive birds of southern Patagonia.
Leaving Laguna Azul behind, we continued our journey through the eastern side of Torres del Paine.

Laguna Azul to Cascada Río Paine

Our next stop was Cascada Río Paine, where the river tumbles over a series of rocky ledges before continuing its journey across the Patagonian landscape. The power of the water provided a striking contrast to the peaceful shores of Laguna Azul.
Before leaving Torres del Paine, we made one final stop at the visitor centre. As the starting point for many of the park's famous treks, the visitor centre was also the closest we were going to get to the iconic towers.

By now, the weather had begun to turn and low cloud obscured much of the peaks, but we were fortunate enough to catch a few final glimpses before beginning the journey home.
As we made our way back towards Cerro Castillo, we paused at the Mirador Lago Sarmiento viewpoint for one last look across the park. By now, dark clouds had enveloped much of the massif and the weather we had allowed extra time for had finally arrived. Even so, occasional breaks in the cloud allowed shafts of sunlight to illuminate the surrounding landscape, providing a fitting farewell to three unforgettable days in Torres del Paine.
By the time we returned to Cerro Castillo, the weather had become noticeably more unsettled and the conditions we had allowed extra time for had finally arrived. Before settling in for the evening, we took a stroll around the small town in search of somewhere to eat other than our lodge. Although the options were limited, it gave us a chance to reflect on four unforgettable days in Torres del Paine. We couldn't have asked for a better finale to our time in the park. The peaceful shores of Laguna Azul, dramatic views of the towers and the ever-changing Patagonian skies had provided a fitting end to our visit to one of South America's most spectacular landscapes.
