After arriving in Hanoi, the first day is best spent settling into the rhythm of the city and recovering from the journey. The streets of the Old Quarter are filled with scooters, street food stalls, cafés, and narrow shopfronts that create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Vietnam. Around Hoàn Kiếm Lake, locals gather in the evening while the city begins to glow with lights and activity. It is an ideal introduction to the country — lively, chaotic, colourful, and full of character.
